5 out of 5 stars Great price   September 5, 2010

Good gun for price. I bought this for work. Great for multi purpose use. Tested accurate within a degree + or - in normal hvac operations with my departments higher priced temp gun. Love it.

5 out of 5 stars Love this unit   September 2, 2010
Arnold Williams (Celeste, Tx)
Had it two weeks with initial use to find weak spots of insulation in outside walls of new home. This unit showed them extremely well. I waited till the sun had show on wall for few hours on these 100 degree Texas days. Used unit and rapidly (about 6 second for 8 ft horizontal sweep) could easily find the weak spots. Around every wall socket and wall switch were hot spots and in a few areas along floor and ceiling. I could focus around those areas and accurately measure the no insulation area and the blend of insulation vs none out to full insulation. The .1 degree resolution made it easy. When I pulled the wall plates off and stuck my hand in the Kintrex reading profile matched what I felt inside. While the absolute temperature accuracy is not that great it's Relative temperature accuracy is very good. In areas with no insulation vs full R19 insulation with outside temp 101 and thermostat set at 80 on I consistently measured around 15 to 17 degrees of temperature change on the inside walls (always checking on horizontal line at same distance from floor). After putting in additional insulation got it down to less than 2 degrees (wiring and electric box areas}. I am very happy with unit.

Excellent thermometer. Performs grate. Design could be a little bit better. I would give four and a half stars to it. Though there are only 4 or 5 stars options available. Thus I gave four stars to it.

5 out of 5 stars Thermometer accuracy and emissivity   August 23, 2010

Most people don't seem to realize that the accuracy of this thermometer (all infrared temperature sensors) is very dependent on a property of every material called "emissivity". In general, you will get a more accurate reading when the material has a high emissivity. Materials with low emissivity will reflect infrared light. If the material has a *very* low emissivity, such as with aluminum foil, then the device will be reading the temperature of the objects that are in the foil's reflection - such as the kitchen, the oven interior surface, and even yourself. Luckily, most of the surfaces associated with foods being cooked have a high emissivity (water, flesh, oil, plant matter, etc), so the device will be fairly accurate with those. But there's another thing to consider for cooking applications - this device still is only measuring the surface temperature. With foods like meats, you are still going to want to use a temperature probe so that you can measure the inside temperature.
This device should work well with measuring temperature of candy, melted soap, oils, foods cooked at relatively low temperature such as breads, or food that you are re-heating. It should also work very well for examining doughs.
It should also work well on most non-metallic painted surfaces.
It should work *somewhat* on windows, as they have a fairly high emissivity, and low transmittance to infrared (that is, infrared light does not pass through them even though visible light does).
Do *not* use it on any unpainted metals.
